Sessions: a Friday in three records
Pomona Sessions starts at five with the light still high and ends when the island says so. The music has to do three different jobs on the way.
Five o'clock on a Friday is not a dancefloor. It is a beach with the tide going out, a few people still in the water, and a bar that has just opened. The first record has to know that. Something with a pulse but no urgency: a slow cumbia, a bossa with the vocals low, the kind of thing you can hear the sea over.
Sunset is the second job. The light changes fast here, and for about twenty minutes the whole beach turns towards the west. The music should get out of the way. A big drop at six thirty is the wrong call.
Then it is dark, the lanterns are on, dinner is mostly done, and the third record is the one everyone came for. Latin rhythm with the tempo up. Salsa dura, baile funk, a bit of reggaeton if the table by the speakers has asked nicely. This is when the beanbags migrate and the sand becomes a floor.
Why Friday
Boats from Bali arrive through Friday afternoon. People land, drop their bags, and walk the beach looking for somewhere to start the weekend. We are on the west side with the sunset in front of us. It was not a hard decision.
