The case for a plus one

Tuesday is the quietest night on the island. We turned it into the one night you are not allowed to eat alone.

Restaurants like to say their food is made for sharing. Ours literally is: the picanha is 250 grams of rump cap and comes with rice, beans and plantain for the middle of the table. A sangria arrives in a 1200ml jug. You can eat alone at Pomona, and people do, but the menu is quietly on the side of company.

Plus 1 Tuesdays makes that explicit. Tuesday is the quietest night of the week on the island, which is why we picked it. Bring one person. A friend, a date, the person you met on the dive boat who seemed alright. Tables of two become tables of four by nine o'clock more often than you would think.

The rule is simple. Do not come alone.

What to order for two: the ceviche mixto and the soft shell crab arepas to start, the chicken a la brasa or the picanha depending on appetite, and the churros, which are the only dish on the menu people refuse to share. Ask the bar about the Plus 1 pour when you sit down.

Doors at seven. The island is dark and quiet by then, which is exactly why Tuesday works.
